Data Abstraction Automation
The Society for Vascular Surgery’s Vascular Quality Initiative (SVS VQI) continues to advance efforts that support high-quality, efficient data collection. Data Abstraction Automation is the next step in this evolution — leveraging technology to simplify the process of entering clinical data into VQI registries.
By connecting registry data fields with information already documented in electronic health records (EHRs), Data Abstraction Automation reduces manual data entry and enhances accuracy, consistency, and timeliness. This allows participating centers to devote more time to patient care and quality improvement

How It Works
SVS VQI is collaborating with leading EHR partners to develop and test automated data capture processes that align with registry requirements.
These efforts focus on:
- Streamlined workflows: Extracting key clinical data elements directly from structured EHR fields.
- Data integrity: Ensuring that all automated data are validated against SVS VQI standards.
- Security and compliance: Maintaining strict adherence to HIPAA and SVS Patient Safety Organization (PSO) data protection protocols.
As additional partners and solutions are evaluated, SVS VQI will continue to expand automation opportunities for centers across all registries.
Benefits for Participating Centers
- Reduced abstraction time and data entry burden
- Improved data completeness and accuracy
- Faster access to quality reports and benchmark feedback
- Greater focus on clinical outcomes and performance improvement initiatives
What’s next?
SVS VQI is currently collaborating with select EHR vendors to pilot automated abstraction workflows. Broader participation opportunities and technical details will be shared as development progresses.
Centers interested in learning more about automation readiness, pilot participation, or future implementation opportunities are encouraged to contact the SVS VQI team at vqi@fivoshealth.com
